So let's talk a little more about microgreens. What exactly are they? Microgreens are considered to be baby plants that are carefully grown for one to three weeks. A few types of microgreens include basil, kale, wheatgrass and broccoli. Broccoli is one of the top microgreens having “550% of the daily value of cumulative nutrients''* . They can be grown right at your windowsill or outside in your garden. All in all, they are easy to grow and great for your health!

Benefits of adding microgreens into your diet: Microgreens not only contain vitamins and nutrients for the body, they also have many health benefits and illness fighting qualities. Most microgreens have tons of antioxidants as well as high levels of potassium, iron, zinc, vitamin C, E and K. Their antioxidants can lower the risk of heart disease, may lower cholesterol levels, and can lower the risk of getting diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

Different types of microgreens: There are many different groups of seeds. They can be categorized into families such as the Brassicaceae family, Asteraceae family, Amaryllidaceae family, Cucurbitaceae family, and many others. We include Kale, Pea and Alfalfa in our garden boxes.

How to grow your very own microgreens at home: To start your very own microgreen mini-garden, you will need quality seeds (like the ones in our Let Your Garden Grow Gift Box ) and a fitting container with potting soil. Once soil is prepared, the seeds can be evenly spread over the soil and set on a windowsill with sunlight or outside in your garden, but until germination occurs, keep them sealed with a lid. Once the microgreens begin growing, take off the lid so the plants can absorb all the sunlight. Mist with water as needed and within a couple of weeks when a few of true leaves begin to grow, you will have your own nutrient-rich microgreens!

What do with your microgreens.

Many people treat them as a cute little garnish. They certainly add interest to a dish but very little nutritional value in such small amounts. These little spouts are powerhouses that should be eaten in quantity so you get the benefits. Add them to your food - to a tortilla rollup, salads, top your burgers, add to a smoothie. There are no rules! I would suggest eating them raw to get the maximum nutrition. If you are a person who has problems eating mature broccoli, or kale because of the roughage, try adding the microgreens to your food and see how you do with them. You might find you get much more nutrition with much less bulk. It may be easier on your digestion.
